Alexia Maccon was known as a lady of regal bearing and not much more. Society generally considered her looks too swarthy to give much credence despite her rank. Alexia, herself, had always believed good posture was her last best hope and was proud to have acquired the "regal bearing" epithet. This morning, however, blankets and pillows thwarted her; she could only flounder gracelessly up to her elbows, her backbone as limp as a noodle.
from chapter 1 of Changeless by Gail Carriger

Ms. Carriger really has a way with quirky wording. There are not many books these days where I love the writing as much as I love the plot, but the Parasol Protectorate series comes damn close.

By the time he'd finished reading the notebook, Jack's cigarette was little more than a tube of ash. He stubbed the remains out on his boot-heel.
<<Is it him?>> he asked.
Tzu-lu was so surprised at hearing a white man speak Chinese that he very nearly missed what came next.

from chapter 1 of Year of the Horse by Justin Allen

Still not sure what to make of this yet, but I'm looking forward to the Chinese Western vibes, a la Firefly (w/o the sci-fi) 8D

"Ivy, my dear," said Miss Tarabotti as her friend bustled up, "how marvelous of you to find time to walk at such short notice! What a hideous bonnet. I do hope you did not pay too much for it."
"Alexia! How perfectly horrid of you to criticize my hat. Why would I not be able to walk this morning? You know I never have anything better to do on Thursdays. Thursdays are so tiresome, don't you find?" replied Miss Hisselpenny.

from chapter 2 of Soulless by Gail Carriger

I haven't giggled my way through a book in such a long time. The humour is of the "disastrously polite" variety, layered with bucketloads of sarcasm. Side characters are incredibly enjoyable, as is the deliciously described world and intriguing mystery in the plot. I do adore friends that are comfortable enough with each other to bluntly declare their true opinions lol

"Hanna." Despite her apathy, Rosalee addressed me with an undue amount of care, as though I were a rabid dog she didn’t want to spook. "Did you kill your aunt?"
I ate the last bit of grilled cheese. I licked the grease from my fingers. "Probably."

from chapter 1 of Bleeding Violet by Dia Reeves

This is about as far as I got in the book, which isn't far considering I read this teaser on the author's website lol. Just finished a TEN PAGE ASTRONOMY MIDTERM (short answer and fill in the blanks *dies*) so I haven't gotten much sleep the past night...I'm definitely going to try and finish this by the end of the week though, don't think I could help myself even if I still have a short paper due =X

Kirk gave him a skeptical look, "How would you know how things 'typically' operate around here?"
Spock seemed surprised by the question. "I have read the Recruit's Manual."
"We've been here three days, Stretch. That thing's eleven hundred pages."
"Eleven hundred and twenty. Including the index."

from chapter 37 of Collision Course by William Shatner

Sorry for the lack of updates, I'm at a friend's house where I don't have a stable internet connection DDD8
This book has been a on-and-off venture for me, mostly because I bought it while on a Star Trek high - introduced to the fandom by the 2009 movie and ended up enjoying the original series more lol. Now that high has sort of worn off, but I admit the "mystery" aspect of this novel was pretty well plotted. Will finish this soon, and just finished Hero yesterday, so new reviews should be up within the week =)

Someone once said that “French is the language that turns dirt into romance.” Valentin knew this to be true because he lived in Paris, and when he wasn’t feeling romantic, he was feeling like dirt.
from prologue of Another Faust by Daniel and Dina Nayeri

I cheated and copied a random passage from the Prologue in text form since I'm listening to the audio version. This book works amazingly well in audio form, especially since the narrator has an amazing range of accents for each of the characters...though they eventually all convert to "American" accents about a few chapters in. Really interesting concepts in this book, looking at the teenage desperation for beauty, love, and fame and how far teens would go to achieve them. I'm quite taken with every single one of the children, and even the "evil" Madame Vileroy. Hoping to finish listening to this by the end of the week and get a review up soon =)

The moonlight reflected off an old medal the president had once given Dad for single-handedly fending off an invasion of telepathic starfish-shaped aliens and illuminated a very distinct impression on the thug's face. Panic.
from chapter 1 of Hero by Perry Moore

Okay, I admit the writing isn't perfect (run-on sentence much?), and there is evidently a more juvenile-fantastical sheen to the superhero theme than Soon I Will Be Invincible. However, I did really enjoy Teen Titans and X-Men Evolution when I watched them a few years back, and I'm getting similar teenager-discovering-and-dealing-with-new-powers vibes from this novel. Also, I'm rooting for the Man in Black/Thom because Uberman/Thom has a bit of the Harry/Ginny feel to it =T

To be a supervillain, you need to have certain things. Don't bother with a secret identity, that's a hero thing. Not that it wouldn't be convenient to take off the mask and disappear into the crowds, the houses, the working world. Perhaps too convenient -- why become the most audacious criminal mind on Earth (or at least in the top four), only to slink off in the other direction when things get difficult?
from chapter 1 of Soon I Will Be Invincible by Austin Grossman

Though it's less laugh-out-loud funny than I had expected, the sombre tone and dry humour works rather well to make this superhero-populated world rather believable.

I'm in the process of changing my layout for the new year and setting up a few (two to be precise) new weekly features where I rant about covers and titles. I'm not sure if I should put them on Mondays, Fridays, or Saturdays though...
Also, I've switched to linking to Amazon from now on because I realize not everyone shops on Amazon.ca =)

What was different was that he looked to be made of a convolution of fleshy cords knotted and wrapped around themselves, a mass of twisted tendrils given shape and form. Shape, form, and a hideously twitching life.
"I don't remember that in your goddamn mythology book," I gritted in a low tone to Niko.

from chapter 8 of Nightlife by Rob Thurman

Finally done exams so I should be able to get back to mass reading and hopefully more posts soon =)

This week's teaser is from a book I'm very conflicted about in terms of rating. On the one hand, the dialogue leaves much to be desired. On the other hand, the story is rather original and, as the quote shows, the author gives some very imaginative twists to different mythical beings (trolls in this case). I'll wait until I get to the end of the book before I make any final judgements though.

"Skatouioannis?" Ted said as they got on the freight elevator.
"Greek word. Means 'Shitty John.' It's like a demon made out of crap."

from chapter 6 of Poison Sleep by T.A. Pratt

Since I haven't been able to review much lately (essays due past two weeks and back-to-back exams coming up next week), I'll just do some weekly stuff to compensate until I'm free 8D;
