Saturday Screening: January 2010

First of all, I hope you guys don't mind me flooding your readers/inbox with memes. Luckily(?) this new meme won't be weekly, despite its title...most likely bi-weekly or monthly, but always on Saturdays. Anyways, the point is, I'm averaging about 5 movies minimum per month at the moment and thought I might as well post up some mini-ratings/reviews. I've made a separate page to host all of my movie reviews here, the new reviews I post for this meme will be added to that page as I go =)

A monthly meme where I post about movies I've recently watched and ones I'm dying to see. I'll do a mini ★ review for each movie I've seen, and express in ♥s how excited I am for trailers of movies soon to be released. See all of my movie reviews here.

Anticipated Screenings: 3

Recent Screenings
  • Tropic Thunder (2008) ★★★★
actors of note: Robert Downey Jr. + Ben Stiller
mini-review: seriously didn't recognize RDJ at first lol; Ben Stiller is another of my favourite comedic actors, and I love their whole "defy the expectations" theme; not a perfect movie, and I'm not impressed by the drug/potty humour, but it's really really entertaining to say the least; I WANT TO WATCH SATAN'S ALLEY *AHEM*
  • Gothika (2003) ★★★.5 - class
actors of note: Robert Downey Jr.
mini-review: the 0.5 is for the movie itself (wasn't particularly scary, just dark, literally); the ★★★ is for Robert Downey Jr.'s 30-second appearances throughout lol; favourite moment: "Because you were married." adorable, lovesick, and ultimately a gentleman ♥
  • RoboCop (1987) ★★★.5 - class
mini-review: this was HILARIOUS, sometimes intentionally (ex. dialogue) and sometimes not (ex. buckets and buckets of "blood"); girl was kickass, Robo was poker-face funny, and there's lots of people getting mutilated, hilariously; oh and there's some hypocritical critique on capitalism and technology
  • Freaks (1932) ★★★.5 - class
mini-review: this was banned in a lot of countries apparently, since they starred actual "freaks" from circuses; it wasn't particularly stimulating, moreso trying to portray the "freaks" as sympathetic and human, rather than things to be looked at; kinda reflects the "popular kids get served by the nerds" troupe in teen movies
  • X-Men (2000) ★★★
mini-review: action sequences made me laugh (in the bad way); Wolverine/Rogue friendship fluff was so adorable ♥
  • X-Men 2 (2003) ★★★.5
mini-review: action sequences have improved; there is an Asian character! I wanted pretty-boy Nightcrawler a la X-Men Evolution
  • Sleepy Hollow (1999) ★★★
mini-review: it was amazingly pretty, though the blood was a bit too "paint splash" to me; acting was kinda stilted, I laughed in all the wrong places; the Horseman's growling noises were just kind of hilarious towards the end; not scary at all really...

Anticipated Screenings

Alice in Wonderland (March 2010) → anticipation: ♥♥♥.5

The special effects look amazing yes, but I've never been a big fan of Alice in Wonderland...Through the Looking Glass was more my thing I think? I'm not sure what to make of Johnny Depp as Mad Hatter...and the Alice character seems rather boring...BUT, SPECIAL EFFECTS AND PSYCHEDELIC RANDOMNESS, YES.

Kick Ass (April 2010) → anticipation: ♥♥♥.5

IT'S SO COLOURFUL!! I'm so fangirling Hit Girl right now, and Big Daddy, okay and Kick Ass + Red Mist to a degree; from the teaser vids they've released, I'm still not decided whether it'll be a disaster or not, but I'm sure I'll enjoy watching the rainbow action sequences lol

Iron Man 2 (May 2010) → anticipation: ♥♥♥♥♥
actors of note: Robert Downey Jr.

Iron Man is my favourite superhero movie of all time at the moment, and RDJ is my favourite American actor, there is no way I will not enjoy this sequel 8D

New follower! And, btw, I totally voted for the custom layout design because yours is ADORABLE. Seriously. I think it's just missing a panda, hehe.

And nice reviews! Freaks definitely sounds interesting (though a bit fail), and I can totally relate to laughing at the wrong places. oops. And I'm with Ah Yuan on the Alice in Wonderland. THAT is beautiful. :)

I am really looking forward to Alice in Wonderland. I think it is going to be wild on the big screen. I am not going in thinking its going to be like the old Alice but this is to be new and a different angle.

Thanks for the trailers!
