In My Mailbox 2009/12/06

Each week I will post a list of the books I've borrowed, received, or bought. I will keep a weekly tally in each post, as well as a yearly one on the sidebar. All books with PoC themes/authors will be listed for the "New Crayons" meme.
All prices are listed in Canadian dollars.
(hosted weekly by The Story Siren / The Printed Page; New Crayons by Color Online)

Tally for 2009/12/06
Borrowed: 0
Received: 1
Bought: 1
Total Cost: $0.00

Again, two books this week, one of which I "bought" with Amazon gift cards I swapped for on SwagBucks =D More about that at the bottom of the post for those interested =)

Eating Animals
by Jonathan Safran Foer
Jonathan Safran Foer spent much of his teenage and college years oscillating between carnivore and vegetarian. As he became a husband and a father, he kept returning to two questions: Why do we eat animals? And would we eat them if we knew how they got on our dinner plates?
Brilliantly synthesizing philosophy, literature, science, and his own undercover detective work, Eating Animals explores the many fictions we use to justify our eating habits-from folklore to pop culture to family traditions and national myth-and how such tales justify a brutal ignorance. Marked by Foer's profound moral ferocity and unvarying generosity, as well as the vibrant style and creativity that made his previous books, Everything is Illuminated and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, huge bestsellers, Eating Animals is a celebration and a reckoning, a story about the stories we've told - and the stories we now need to tell.

This is a non-fiction book of a father researching into the meat industry to decide whether he should commit his new son as a vegetarian. My Mom is a vegetarian by faith, but I'm not religious so I'm pretty interested in seeing if this will convince me to give up meat (though I'll probably still be very very clingy when it comes to seafood). I've flipped through it a bit and there looks to be rather engaging textual graphics =D

Master Li and Number Ten Ox #1:
Bridge of Birds ⇒ New Crayon!
by Barry Hughart
When the children of his village were struck with a mysterious illness, Number Ten Ox found master Li Kao. Together they set out to find the Great Root of Power, the only possible cure, and together they discover adventure and legend, and the power of belief...

In my first IMM post I blogged about the third book in the series that I bought, Eight Skilled Gentlemen, and I've been trying to get my hands on the full "trilogy" - it was dropped by the publisher past book 3 I think, and book two seems extremely elusive/can't be found =(
Always loved reading fairy tale retellings, and Chinese myths, so combine the two, and this series shall be my one true love 8D
Bought with "free" SwagBucks Amazon giftcards

I'm still waiting for a lot of prizes and online orders to slowly ship in and I've got three books waiting for me at an alternate address, so the next few weeks may have longer lists~

And now, about Swagbucks!

You basically earn "bucks" randomly when using their search site. I admit it's not as godly as Google, but for general searches like Wiki or official sites, it works just as well. There are also bonus points you can get from their widget, toolbar, or twitter/facebook, and it's all FREE.
A $5 Amazon gift card (com or ca) is about 45 swagbucks - just a note their $25 and higher cards cost more than accumulated single $5 ones though so if it's for personal use just aim for the $5 ones.

Ooh, yay, I'd love to read Foer's new book! I'm a vegetarian myself so I might just have to get that book!
