In My Mailbox 2009/11/29

Each week I will post a list of the books I've borrowed, received, or bought. I will keep a weekly tally in each post, as well as a yearly one on the sidebar. All books with PoC themes/authors will be listed for the "New Crayons" meme.
All prices are listed in Canadian dollars.
(hosted weekly by The Story Siren / The Printed Page; New Crayons by Color Online)

not a vlog, but a photo to compensate =D

Tally for 09/11/29
Borrowed: 0
Received: 2
Bought: 0
Total Cost: $0.00

Only two books this week, but both very treasured additions to my growing mountain...well more like hill (don't own a shelf atm OTZ)!

Twenty Palaces #1:
Child of Fire
by Harry Connolly
Ray Lilly is living on borrowed time. He’s the driver for Annalise Powliss, a high-ranking member of the Twenty Palace Society, a group of sorcerers devoted to hunting down and executing rogue magicians. But because Ray betrayed her once, Annalise is looking for an excuse to kill him – or let someone else do the job.
Unfortunately for both of them, Annalise’s next mission goes wrong, leaving her critically injured. With the little magic he controls, Ray must complete her assignment alone. Not only does he have to stop a sorcerer who’s sacrificing dozens of innocent lives in exchange for supernatural power, he must find – and destroy – the source of that inhuman magic.

I've featured this on my first Wishlist Wednesday, so I'm very very excited to read through this! Urban fantasy w/ reformed criminal and his female boss who holds a grudge against his past betrayal. There's Butcher praise on the cover =X

Silence of the Lambs Prequel:
Red Dragon
by Thomas Harris
Lying on a cot in his cell with Alexandre Dumas's Le Grand Dictionnaire de Cuisine open on his chest, Hannibal "The Cannibal" Lecter makes his debut in this legendary horror novel, which is even better than its sequel, The Silence of the Lambs. As in Silence, the pulse-pounding suspense plot involves a hypersensitive FBI sleuth who consults psycho psychiatrist Lecter for clues to catching a killer on the loose.
The sleuth, Will Graham, actually quit the FBI after nearly getting killed by Lecter while nabbing him, but fear isn't what bugs him about crime busting. It's just too creepy to get inside a killer's twisted mind. But he comes back to stop a madman who's been butchering entire families. The FBI needs Graham's insight, and Graham needs Lecter's genius. But Lecter is a clever fiend, and he manipulates both Graham and the killer at large from his cell.
That killer, Francis Dolarhyde, works in a film lab, where he picks his victims by studying their home movies. He's obsessed with William Blake's bizarre painting The Great Red Dragon and the Woman Clothed with the Sun, believing there's a red dragon within him, the personification of his demonic drives.

I have a vague recollection of watching like...one or two scenes from Silence of the Lambs and never really appreciating it much - it sounded like a horror movie, which I also was not a fan of. I still haven't read that book, but this prequel sounds really amazing. I guess I was kinda iffy about the female detective being manipulated in the original and this one has a male detective instead, which sounds more interesting. Also, love books with evil protagonists >D
Mooched from BookMooch

That's all this week! I've got loads of others coming in for the next couple of weeks (2 mooches, 24 wins), so I'll be buried under my mountain (it will grow by then) for the winter break *glee*
